ICC World Cup 2023: South Africa achieves thumping victory against Afghanistan
Afghanistan has officially exited the World Cup following their defeat against South Africa tonight
AHMEDABAD: Afghanistan has officially exited the World Cup following their defeat against South Africa tonight. In the final match, the Afghans succumbed to a five-wicket loss, with Gerald Coetzee and Rassie van der Dussen emerging as the standout performers.
During their batting innings, Afghanistan's top order crumbled, reminiscent of a loaf of bread. Azmatullah (97*) was the lone warrior, standing firm until the end of the innings. Unfortunately, his valiant knock lacked substantial support from others, leading to Afghanistan being bowled out for 244. Coetzee claimed four wickets (4/44), while Lungi Ngidi (2/69) and Keshav Maharaj (2/25) secured two wickets each.
In the pursuit of this modest target, South Africa got off to a solid start. Openers Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma forged a partnership of 64 runs for the first wicket. Later, van der Dussen (76*) steered the chase, supported by Aiden Markram (25) and Andile Phehlukwayo (39*). Through their combined efforts, South Africa reached 247/5 in 47.3 overs.
South Africa is set to clash with Australia in semifinal 2 on November 16. Meanwhile, despite their elimination, Afghanistan can take pride in their remarkable performance throughout the tournament.
Scorecard:
Afghanistan: 244/10 (50 overs)
South Africa: 247/5 (47.3 overs)
