IMD issues red alert in some parts of Telangana on December 5

HYDERABAD: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for areas in Telangana due to the effects of Cyclone Michuang.

Many districts in the state will experience heavy rains, thunder, lightning, and strong winds due to cyclone's impact.

East Telangana will experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, while the rest of the state, including Hyderabad, will experience moderate to light rainfall.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy rainfall (more than 204.4 mm) is expected in isolated parts on December 5, 2023 in Telangana.

Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem and Khammam districts in Telangana are very likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy rainfall on December 5, 2023.

An Orange alert has been issued for December 6, 2023, with heavy to very heavy rain being possible in isolated locations in the Telangana districts of Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Warangal, and Hanmakonda.

However, light to moderate rains are expected in Hyderabad on December 5 and 6, 2023. Minimum temperatures in Telangana are expected to be 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal this week due to easterly winds and cloudy conditions.

The Cyclonic storm Michuang over the west central and adjoining southwestern Bay of Bengal off the coast of south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining northern Tamil Nadu moved northwestward at a speed of 8 km/h during the last six hours, intensified into a severe cyclone and was located at 8:30 am on December 4, 2023. It was located over the same region near latitude 13.3°N and 81.0°E, about 90 km east northeast of Chennai, 170 km southeast of Nellore, 200 km northeast of Puducherry, 300 km south-southeast of Bapatla and 320 km south of Machilipatnam.

It is likely to gradually intensify and move northwards almost parallel to the coast of South Andhra Pradesh. The cyclonic storm will cross the coast of south Andhra Pradesh between Nellore and Machilipatnam, near Bapatla, on the morning of December 5 as a severe cyclonic storm with maximum sustained winds of 90-100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph.
