Interpol congratulates Drugs Control Administration for seizure of counterfeit drugs in Hyderabad

Interpol which carries out major operations to crack down on counterfeit medicines across several countries in the world, came to know about spurious drug rackets busted by the DCA in Hyderabad.

HYDERABAD: Interpol which carries out major operations to crack down on counterfeit medicines across several countries in the world, came to know about spurious drug rackets busted by the Drugs Control Administration (DCA), Telangana, and in a letter on January 16, 2024, congratulated the DCA for successful detection and seizure of spurious Drugs in Hyderabad.

In a press release on Saturday VB Kamalasan Reddy, DG DCA Telangana said that Spurious drugs were a major threat to public health. Spurious drugs not only fail to cure the disease but over time, create disastrous consequences for the patient. Spurious drugs by their very nature difficult to detect. They were often designed to appear identical to the genuine product.

DCA officers were working relentlessly to detect spurious drug movement in the market and made every effort to make the State of Telangana free of spurious drugs.

On December 29, 2023, DCA busted a spurious, drug racket of fake antibiotics, hypertension, and cholesterol medicines, and analgesics which were falsely labeled under the names of reputed companies like Sun Pharma, Glenmark Pharma, Aristo Pharmaceuticals, Torrent Pharma and certain antibiotics claimed to be manufactured by a fictitious and non-existent company which were shipped to Hyderabad through courier from Kashipur, Uttarakhand. DCA seized stocks worth Rs 26 lakh.

On January 3, 2024, DCA busted a counterfeit antibiotics racket involving the shipping of ‘fake antibiotics’ to Telangana State through courier from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. DCA seized fake antibiotics worth Rs. 22.95 lakhs during raids at Uppal and Dilsukhnagar, Hyderabad.

DCA Telangana issued an advisory to the public on spurious drugs’ on January 12, 2024, for public awareness.
