One-horned male Rhinoceros undergoes eye surgery in Nehru Zoological Park

HYDERABAD: A major eye surgery was performed to one-horned male Rhinoceros at Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad on Monday. The 11-year-old Rhinoceros Sai Vijay had been suffering from eye problems since childhood.
Nehru Zoological Park curator Dr Sunil S Hiremath said that the animal was under treatment for the growth of left eyeball and had been suffering with severe pain for the last six months. The surgery was successfully conducted for enucleation (Removal of Eyeball) of the left eye by a team of doctors– G Shambhulingam, MA Hakeem, Ch Praveen Kumar, J Radhakrishna Rao, M Navin Kumar with assistance of zoo veterinary staff and animal keepers, he said.
“All the samples are collected and sent to Veterinary Biological & Research Institute (VBRI), Hyderabad for histo-pathological, hematology and serological for confirmative diagnosis. This is a major surgical intervention taken up in Hyderabad Zoo in coordination of different veterinary doctors,” Hiremath said.
