HYDERABAD: Tomatoes have surpassed fuel in price, with 1 kg of tomatoes now costing Rs 120-140 in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, and even in other parts of the country.

Heavy rains in Telugu states, according to reports, hindered the supply chain, leading to a shortage and an enormous spike in prices. Along with tomato prices, there has been an abrupt increase in the price of green chilies, which are now available in the market for Rs 100-120kg, affecting vegetable vendors' businesses.

According to Telangana horticulture department, prices have risen due to unseasonal rainfall and significant crop damage in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra, where the tomatoes are procured in May and June.

Prices are expected to fall when local produce begins to arrive at the market in the next 15 to 20 days, according to reports.
