HYDERABAD: The US Consulate General in Hyderabad began operations at its new facility in Nanakramguda on Monday. The new consulate, located on a 12-acre property, represents the US State Department's aim to offer safe, secure, effective, and resilient buildings for US diplomacy.
The $340 million construction project includes $70 million in local investment and employed approximately 1,000 Americans, Indians, and foreign nationals. The U.S. Consulate General represents the United States in the Indian states of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha.
"Today marks a milestone in the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership. At a cost of $340 million, our new consulate facility in Hyderabad is an investment in the U.S. relationship with India. We look forward to increasing our staff, including visa officers, in order to continue expanding U.S.-India ties in the months and years to come," said Jennifer Larson, U.S. Consul General, Hyderabad.
The relationship between the United States and India in the region encompasses a wide range of significant concerns, including higher education and cultural initiatives, military cooperation, health and environmental issues, and commercial relationships. The Consulate General of Hyderabad issued over 18,000 student visas in 2022, and US corporations have spent billions of dollars in the region's tech, defence, aerospace, and pharmaceutical sectors.
The Embassy works with local partners to protect historic landmarks through the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, and Consulate staff works with local journalists to counteract misinformation and expand coverage of climate change. The US and Indian forces also collaborate on joint exercises from the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam.
