Failed engineering students protest in Osmania University against detention system

HYDERABAD: Several students from private engineering colleges affiliated with Osmania University held a protest on Tuesday after more than 1,000 students failed due to changes in detention rules.

Many failed students were seen protesting on the university campus, demanding that all failed students' detentions be lifted. The students also demanded the university cancel the detention system and change the existing credit system.

According to the credit system, engineering students must obtain at least 50 percent of the total credits allotted, or they would be detained in accordance with university rules. However, many students were failed as they could not obtain 50 percent enough credits.

Telangana Engineering students Joint Action Committee (JAC), alleged over 1,000 students failed as a result of the change in detention rules. They claimed that online classes were held for the 2019-2023 batch, causing the subject to be delivered inefficiently, resulting in students failing more subjects.

Telangana Engineering Students (JAC) state president Raichur Sharan kumar stated, "The same effect was felt by the 2020-2024 batch students as a result of online classes. Many of the classes were held online for the 2021 to 2025 batch as well, and they faced numerous challenges as a result of the pandemic. In light of all of these factors, as well as the widespread impact on their academics and schedules, we demand that all failed students' detentions be lifted ".
