Let kids pick up peacock feathers, KTR tweets in response to a mother's letter

HYDERABAD: Telangana IT Minister K T Rama Rao on Monday responded to a letter written by a disheartened mother, on Twitter. The mother had written a letter to KTR on Sunday, expressing her disappointment that many children in the KBR park were not allowed to take the fallen peacock feathers along with them.

"This letter from the mother of a young child was touching. Since Peacock is the national bird, rules are strict about carrying peacock feathers under Wildlife Protection Act. I request the KBR park authorities to make an exemption only for kids when they carrying feathers," tweeted KTR, responding to the letter.

The mother, who visited KBR park along with her five-year-old son Vedanth, said that her son and other children were excited to collect the fallen feathers of our national bird but sadly they were stopped by the park authorities. She said that they refused to give the feathers to the children saying that killing or hunting was a punishable offence under the Forest Act.

"Don't you think the feathers would have been of more use being in the tiny hands than thrown in a messy storeroom in the park," said the mother in her letter. She also questioned that how children could dream of holistic development, experimental learning and inclusive growth if they were being denied a natural experience. "The feeling of love for the animal is intriguing his brain as to how the feather falls off naturally, he will later share this experience with his fellow mates. Don't these small things contribute to the inclusive growth of the child," the mother wondered in her letter.
