HYDERABAD: Aruna Miller made history by becoming the first Indian-American politician to be elected as lieutenant governor of Maryland in the United States. Even more heartening is her Hyderabad roots that assumed prominence ever since her victory in the US midterm elections.

Miller was born in Hyderabad before her parents immigrated to the United States. The 58-year-old former delegate to the Maryland House ran for Lieutenant Governor alongside Wes Moore, the Democratic nominee for Governor.

Aruna is a Missouri University of Science and Technology graduate with a BS in civil engineering and she has worked as a transportation engineer for local governments in California, Virginia and Hawaii. She relocated to Maryland in 1990 and started working for the Montgomery County Department of Transportation there.

Aruna Miller served as the president of the South Asian American Society and a member of the Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee. In 2018, Maryland women legislators presented her with the legislative champion award.
