HYDERABAD: Telangana Governor CP Radhakrishnan approved seven long-pending bills at the Raj Bhavan on Saturday evening.

The approved bills include amendments to the Telangana Panchayat Raj Act, the Telangana State Private University Bill, the Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS) Bill, the Telangana State Minorities Commission Bill, and the Telangana Municipal Act Amendment Bill.

The Telangana State Minorities Commission Amendment Bill now includes the Jain community in the list of state-recognised minorities, which currently represents Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Parsis. The TIMS Bill facilitates the establishment of four teaching hospitals around Hyderabad, as proposed by the state government.

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy met the Governor at the Raj Bhavan last Monday, urging the approval of the bills pending for several days. The previous BRS government had passed these bills in the Assembly and Council, but the then Governor Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan had put them on hold. Following intervention by the Supreme Court, some bills were approved while others remained pending.

The Telangana Municipal Act Amendment Bill, among the seven approved, is particularly significant. It grants members of the Rajya Sabha, in addition to members of the Assembly, Council, and Lok Sabha, voting rights in the election of mayors and deputy mayors in municipalities and corporations.
